Sam's Kitten Recommendations
The things we actually use and love at Dashing Coons. This page is updated often as we find better products.
Food
- Royal Canin Kitten, wet and dry, is what your kitten eats now (Mother & Babycat earlier). Keep the same food for the first few weeks. If you ever switch, mix it in slowly over 7 to 10 days.

Litter
- Tidy Cats Unscented Lightweight (what we use).
- A big, open litter box. Maine Coons grow large!
Toys
- Feather wand teasers, a multi-pack of toy mice, and a puzzle feeder.
- Play every day. Use toys, never hands, so biting stays on the toys.
Scratchers and cat trees
- A tall, sturdy sisal post (32 inches or more), a cardboard scratcher, and a large-breed cat tree.
Carriers
- A large hard-sided carrier that will still fit a grown Maine Coon.
Grooming and nail care
- Cat nail clippers, a wide/fine steel comb, and a slicker brush. A few paws at a time, with treats, is perfect.
Water fountains
- A stainless steel fountain, plus replacement filters.
Pet insurance
- Get a quote early, before any vet visit, so nothing becomes pre-existing.
