Polydactyl Maine Coons Explained (Extra-Toe Maine Coons)
Blog post by DashingCoons · 2026-08-16
Polydactyl Maine Coons carry extra toes — a trait that traces back to the breed's New England origins and is fully accepted by TICA under the MCP designation.
What is a polydactyl Maine Coon?
A polydactyl cat has extra toes on one or more paws. In Maine Coons, this trait is accepted and can vary in expression — from subtle extra toes to large mitten-style paws. Approximately 50% of our kittens are polydactyl.
Is polydactylism harmful?
Usually no. Most polydactyl cats live normal lives. Extra toes mean extra nails, so routine nail trimming is important.
TICA registration for polydactyl Maine Coons
TICA registers polydactyl Maine Coons under the MCP designation — Maine Coon Polydactyl. They are a separate registration category from the standard Maine Coon (MC), but they are fully registerable and can be shown in TICA-sanctioned events. Kittens from a registered MCP program go home with TICA paperwork just like any other registered kitten. The MCP designation is simply an acknowledgment of the structural difference — it carries no negative connotation in the registry.
